Andy Swift Set to Retire from Role as Dallas Cup’s Executive Director

Swift, who has served as Executive Director since 2012, will transition to the tournament’s Board of Directors beginning in June

DALLAS, Texas (Thursday, May 20) – As the Dallas Cup, the oldest and most prestigious international youth soccer tournament in the United States, continues to grow and evolve, the Board of Directors is announcing some exciting leadership changes. The Dallas Cup is pleased to announce that Andy Swift, the current Executive Director, has been elected to the Board of Directors effective June 1, 2021. As a result of his transitioning to the board, Swift will be retiring from his role as Executive Director at the end of May, 2021.

During Swift’s tenure, the tournament saw exponential growth and achieved several significant accomplishments, helping boost the visibility and exposure of the tournament’s athletes, partners, and sponsors. With Swift at the helm as Executive Director, the Dallas Cup nearly doubled in size, going from 180 teams in 2012 to a record 252 teams in 2021. In 2013, Swift helped oversee the transition of the Opening Day ceremonies and marquee games to the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium, which continues to attract record Dallas Cup attendances, including the most recent tournament attendance record of 20,940 in 2019. Swift also helped return girls divisions to the tournament this past spring with a new, marquee partnership with Mary Kay, broadening the influence of the tournament for years to come.

Off the pitch, Swift was instrumental in evolving the tournament into a socially and digitally active event, including the acquisition of TUDN as a broadcasting and media partner for the tournament, which continues to provide unparalleled nationwide reach for the tournament. Furthermore, Swift facilitated relationships, both at the local level with the City of Dallas, FC Dallas, and the north Texas soccer community, as well as with important global brands, professional leagues, and international governing bodies of the sport.

“The board and I would like to recognize the significant contributions that Andy has made to further develop the Dallas Cup into a world class youth tournament,” said Dallas Cup Board President Jim Trebilcock. “He guided us to several milestones that were nearly unthinkable when he began roughly a decade ago, and it would be remiss not to mention the significance of his leadership in seeing the tournament successfully through the COVID-19 crisis. His leadership truly made the difference.”

“We have high admiration for Andy’s impact as the Executive Director, and now we are equally excited to have Andy join the board, as he will help ensure a smooth onboarding of the new executive director. Dallas Cup will undoubtedly continue to benefit from his leadership, ideas, soccer acumen and relationships.”

Swift has been involved with Dallas Cup in some capacity for over 40 years, playing in Dallas Cup III and V, and subsequently serving as a volunteer and a committee chair for fifteen years, before joining the full-time staff as Executive Director in 2012.

"I am incredibly excited for this opportunity and thankful to Jim and the board, both for their amazing support during my tenure as Executive Director, and now for electing to give me a seat at the table,” said Swift. “Ever since I played in my first Dallas Cup as a fourteen year-old, the tournament has been an important part of my life. The ability to now serve on the board brings it full circle. As Executive Director, it has been an amazing honor to work alongside our talented staff and volunteer committee chairs, and I am so grateful for their incredible efforts in helping the tournament reach new heights. I now look forward to supporting them in return, albeit in a different leadership role. The Dallas Cup is truly special, a real gem that our soccer community has helped develop, and I am excited to continue to be a part of it for many, many years to come as we continue to grow and evolve it.”

In his new role on the Board of Directors, Swift will assist with the search efforts for the new Executive Director, as well as with the transition process. The search will begin immediately and further announcements on that effort will be made in the coming days.
